Another thing in the supermarket I rarely see, brussels sprouts. I knew I had the recipe for these greens as they were on my regular magazine, SHAPE. One of my favourite magazines with guilt free, quick and delicious recipes. It's really fun to blog about my first attempts on different kind of food. I've really never tried this before. They were like baby cabbage, cute tiny.. but never underestimate them. They were quite filling for me, or am I just a small eater?

You could definitely have it with rice for lunch or dinner. I really like these greens as they were sweet and crunchy. How shall I put it... sweet like yellow onions! It's one of my favourite vegetables now.

Braised Brussels Sprouts Recipe
(serves 4 - adapted from SHAPE)

450g of brussels sprouts
1/3 cup minced shallots
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup mustard
1/3 cup water, divided

2 tbsp brown sugar*
Olive oil
Freshly grounded black pepper

Method:
Cut of the base of the sprouts with a sharp knife and half them (or you could slice them into tiny pieces). Heat a large pan over medium heat. Drizzle with olive oil and swirl to coat the pan. Add in minced shallots and saute until fragrant for about 2mins. Stir in sprouts, salt, and 3tbsp of water. Spread the brussel sprouts evenly across the pan. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and cook for 5mins.

Meanwhile, combine mustard, brown sugar, and remaining water in a bowl and stir till blended. Once sprouts have cooked for 5mins, pour in mustard mixture and give it a good stir. Reduce heat to cook for another 3-5mins according to preference.
Remove from heat and give it a touch of black pepper.

~|Notes|~
*I replaced sugar with honey for more flavour, do use maple syrup if you have them.
**Sprouts will get brownder and more intensely flavoured the longer it's cooked.

I never know how to cook Brussel sprouts....yours look very delicious (and kind of like Chinese vegetable stir-fry) to me.

Anncoo December 13, 2009 10:59 PM

I also love Brussel sprouts very much. I usually boil the Brussel sprouts until soft, drain and stir fry with butter and garlic.

Surprisingly, I've never had Brussels sprouts before ... even during my stay in the States as they were pretty expensive!! Yours looks really good, aptly described!

I like Brussel sprouts, but I hardly see them even in cold storage outlets. I had some Brussel sprouts over the weekend here in Beijing, but they were kind of bitter :(
Thanks for sharing this recipe, I have already bookmarked it :)

Hi Angie, I didn't know how to cook them too but I've seen them in Health and Diet magazines. I would love to believe that it's good and nutritious :) Thanks!

Hi Anncoo, butter and garlic sounds great! I would love to try that too..

Hi Pei-Lin, yeah it's pretty pricy sold here in KL.. I wonder why it's so expensive even in the states :S

Hi HHB, I'm glad you like this too! It's only sold here recently in KL, in Jusco and Cold Storage. I guess it's a seasonal veg? I would love to grab more of these before they're gone. Bitter could be because of the pesticide? I think the ones I bought were from Australia and they were fine :)

I love brussels sprouts :) This recipe is very interesting - with mustard! This would make a great side dish. Looks so delicious!

My Taste Heaven December 14, 2009 5:54 PM

i have never eaten brussels sprouts before, as i don't really like sprouts....but yours is totally tempting enough to make me hungry!!

ovenhaven December 14, 2009 8:07 PM

While I'm going to join the bandwagon of those who have never eaten brussel sprouts, I have to say I'm not even a fan of vegetables, so it's not the least surprising :P

I do, however, will share this with my mom! This certainly looks interesting :)

Hi Ju, I'm glad you like it! Thanks :)

Hi noobcook, it's my first time and I do like it alot.

Hi Sonia, do tell me about it if you do :)

Hi My Taste Heaven, i guess brussels sprouts are not a very malaysian kind of thing. I never thought they tasted sweet and crunchy until I tried. Thanks for the compliment :)

Hi ovenhaven, I hope your mom likes it! Thanks :)

zurin December 14, 2009 10:00 PM

Yasmeen December 15, 2009 10:28 PM

Simple and nutritious :D

tracieMoo December 15, 2009 11:41 PM

Hi Yasmeen, yes indeed the most simplest thing is healthier as it does not contain more of fancy flavourings.
